What to Wear to An Engagement Party or Cocktail Event

PARA ESPAÑOL ABAJO 🙂

Hi babes!

Last weekend was my sister’s engagement party in my hometown Ciudad Victoria, Mexico and it was a blast. I only spent 24 hours there but it was totally worth it. For those of you who don’t know, Ciudad Victoria is the capital of the Mexican state Tamaulipas. It is like a four-hour drive from the southern border between the U.S. and Mexico.

I don’t know how this kind of events work in the US or in other parts of the world but in Mexico it’s a tradition that the groom’s immediate family comes to the bride’s home and ask for the bride’s hand.

Since we are a huge family, it is hard for all of us to come together at the same time. We are five siblings, each one of us has a significant other and three of them have children… So in total we are a family of nineteen. This time we were almost complete, just the kids and my long-term boyfriend were missing, but the nice thing is that I got to spend time with my brothers and sister. We are a family of party lovers so you can imagine how it goes when we all meet. After dinner, my sister had planned a huge party in our backyard; she hired a DJ and rented lounge seating to receive more guests besides the couple’s immediate family. We danced the night away and when we went to sleep it was already 6 in the morning. It was a great night.

Like I mentioned in my last post, I looked and looked for a dress for the engagement party but I couldn’t find any dress within my budget that I really liked. So I went to Rent the Runway’s webpage and was seriously impressed by their selection; beautiful dresses at affordable prices. This dress in particular was $40 dollars to rent and the retail price is of $170. If you want to read about how Rent the Runway works read my last post here: A Runway Look for Free.

What I like about Rent the Runway is that they have selections for all types of events and dress codes, they even help you choose, detail every aspect of each dress and send you two sizes so you know and feel confident you are choosing the right one. For the engagement party, I chose a pink asymmetrical dress. I chose this one because it is boldly constructed with a cutaway and has one-shoulder silhouette; this asymmetrical Keepsake dress is so on trend and perfect for the hot weather; plus, its light pink hue is perfect for the season.

I paired the dress with powder beige satin sandalettes from H&M. They have wrap over straps at the front and 4 inches heel height; I found them extremely comfortable even though they were only $18! I danced all night wearing them so you know how comfy they are, and it was the first time I wore them so didn’t even need to break them in.

Hola babes!

Your dress is really beautiful and it’s so great that you were able to rent it. It does indeed save a lot of money renting and not buying dresses that you will wear at only one event.

You dress looks amazing and you rented it? Love the idea of that. I have so many dresses i bought for a specific event and only wore it once and they’re just sitting in my closet. I wish i could have rented instead.

  6. I love the idea of renting dresses for special occasions. I don’t need nice dresses that often, so hate spending the money on something I may wear once. I love your selection. Very stylish

What a sweet tradition .. for the groom’s family to go to the bride’s house to ask for her hand. I love it, because she’s truly becoming part of their family as well. As for your dress, it’s stunning and you look just as beautiful as your sister. x

That is a very cute dress. I like that it’s not completely va-va-voom so it has a lot of class to it.

  17. I recently attended a wedding and was one of the bridesmaid so the dress code was fixed, thank God! Deciding what to wear to a wedding or engagement is such a daunting task for a low maintained person like me. Thanks for the tips.
